West Morris Regional High School Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast praises student body for extra-curricular successes.
Achievements and accolades in the West Morris Regional High School district, an often highly ranked learning community, usually find their way into the individual school's hallways. This fall, however, was an extraordinary one, and recognized publicly by the district's Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast. At Monday board of education meeting, Pendergrast gushed about the achievements of the schools so far this year. "Both school plays went off without a hitch, even though we had this hurricane," Pendergrast said. "I just want to congratulate (West Morris Central student board member Alexandra Dean), student director. I heard such tremendous praise." He went on to sing the praises of Central's sectional champion football team and Group III …

As the school year winds down and students set their schedules for the start of classes next fall, the annual compilation of high school rankings by various media outlets has begun. Newsweek just released its yearly rankings of the top 1,000 high schools in the country, and both West Morris Central and Mendham High Schools ranked 226th and 291st, respectively. Central ranked 20th in New Jersey, according to the report, while Mendham ranked 31st in the state. The rankings were compiled using six criteria, according to Newsweek. Making up 75-percent of the formula are three factors: four-year graduation rate; college-acceptance rate; and number of Advanced Placement (AP) and other high-level exams given per student, according to the report. …

Fire alarms are repaired and it will be business as usual on Friday.
After an unexpected electrical malfunction shut down Mendham High School for a day, students will be returning to class on Friday, April 27. The repairs to the fire alarm system needed specialty parts that were not available until the afternoon on Thursday so the decision to shut down the school for the day was made on Wednesday evening. According to West Morris Regional Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast, the system is back online and due to the mild winter, no significant change will be needed in the schedule.

Examine the scores with care, because many factors contribute to the results.
New Jersey released school test scores last week. It’s an annual ritual that is both highly anticipated and loathed by many. No matter how much people complain about the over-testing of students, about the state placing too much emphasis on the tests, about schools teaching to the test and of tests being used to judge schools, everyone combs the test scores to see how students and schools are doing. Judging by the statewide averages on the language arts and math sections of the High School Proficiency Assessment—passing this test is a graduation requirement for most high schoolers—students and schools are doing fairly well, or at least improving. Almost 90 percent of high school juniors, the current Class of 2012, who took the test for the…

The clock is running down. The Mendham High School's Service Club's annual food drive in support of the Chester Food Pantry ends midnight after the Superbowl so residents interested in pitching in have little time left to get in the game. At the end of the school day on Feb. 3 the traditional drive ended in the school, but the inclusion of an online component has extended the donation window through the weekend. "This was our largest drive ever," said Mendham High School teacher and club advisor Russ Raffay. "We are splitting 90% of our donations with the Chester Food Pantry and 10% with St. Michaels which also serves members of our community." Even with the tally setting a new standard, Raffay is hoping the last minute drive to the …
