Black River Middle School Dance Raises Money for AEDs

The Have-A-Heart Valentine’s Dance raises funds and awareness for AED purchases.

Valentine’s Day 2012 is turning out to be quite a celebration for those in favor of automatic external defibrillators being placed in their community. With an AED Good Samaritan bill passing through the Senate 37-1 on Feb. 13 and the Assembly expected to vote on Feb. 16, it may be time to purchase the defibrillators sooner than many anticipated. Fortunately, the students at the Black River Middle School are already one step ahead. “Right from the beginning our Valentine’s Dance was going to be a fundraiser for AEDs,” said Beth Grasso, who is advisor for the sixth and seventh grade. “And there are actually two dances. The goal with both will be to assist our school district in purchasing AEDs.” As always the event was chaperoned by parents …

New Law Could Allow Defibrillators in Chester

Expanded Good Samaritan law makes it easier for the Township to install AEDs.

Community members lobbying for Chester Township to join their neighbors in the Borough and the Mendhams in installing defibrillators around town are hoping a new law can remove a stumbling block. The Good Samaritan Law absolves those trying to help save a life of  responsibility if they cause injury while attempting to give aid. Up until now this did not extend to a person owning or using an automatic external defibrillator during a cardiac arrest. A pair of bills about to hit the floor of the senate mean to change that.  An automated external defibrillator is a portable device that is used to restore heart rhythms to patients in cardiac arrest. Hey there, I actually made a couple calls tonight to see what I could come up with. From what I understand, it ends up being the more of volunteer thing. For example, in Mendham Borough, I was told the police department has volunteered to check on them during their patrols. Your point is well taken.
