Morris County Arts Workshop officially opens its storefront location in the Chester Springs Mall.
The Morris County Arts Workshop officially opened their Hive in Chester on Saturday, with a ribbon cutting ceremony that has been creating an appropriate amount of buzz over the last few months. Part gallery, part performing arts center the Hive is part of MCAW founder Jane Shatz's dream to provide a place for all in the community to have a space to create and experience art. The ribbon cutting in the Chester Springs Shopping Mall was the latest step in a series of leaps for MCAW. Their origami crane project and evening with Jim Breuer are only two of the recent programs the center has been involved in. Sarah Stover and her family 'overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of love' as they receive more than 1,350 origami angels.

The folks at the Morris County Arts Workshop (MCAW) were not ones to sit idly by when they heard that Sarah Stover, 14-year-old freshman at West Morris Mendham High School, was battling follicular lymphoma. As a group dedicated to the power of art in the community, MCAW executive director Jane Shatz decided to use the legend of the origami cranes on Stover's behalf. In Japanese legend, anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted one wish. The original origami public art piece at the Chester Springs Mall titled "Thousand Flights" was made using 1,000 origami cranes folded by Cathy Ring to aid those suffering in Japan as a result of the 2011 tsunami disaster. Morris County Arts Workshop storefront offers place for all ages to create and experience art.
Jane Shatz has an enthusiasm and warmth that is infectious. The director of the Morris County Arts Workshop (MCAW) beams with pride when she discusses her arts programs, her colleagues and all of the local artists she deals with on a regular basis. Shatz has had much to be enthusiastic of late. She has been involved in the origami angel program for Sarah Stover, the Chester teen fighting cancer as well as the tealight tribute to the children of Newton, Conn. And MCAW recently had a fundraiser event held at the Hive in the Chester Springs Mall. What is the Hive? The Morris County Arts Workshop, the non-profit organization which brings after-school art, music, language arts, and cultural programs to youth and seniors in Chester, Mendham and surrounding areas, announces registration for spring is now open. Classes will start the week of Feb. 6, and will culminate with its Spring Showcase in May. New this semester are “half” sessions from six to eight weeks or traditional offerings from 11 to 12 weeks. Most classes are held at the Dickerson and Bragg Elementary Schools and Black River Middle School in Chester, and in Mendham at both Mendham Township and Mendham Borough Elementary and Middle Schools.
