Mendham Township rallies to send the children of Rich and Beth Everett on Florida vacation.
Everyone who hears the story of the Everett family is drawn to learn more. The family of six were Randolph residents who owned a popular horse farm in Long Valley. They were universally embraced by both communities, which is what made the tragedy that struck the night of superstorm Sandy all the more devastating. During the apex of the storm, the lives of Zoe, Talia, Theodore and Pierce Everett were changed forever when a tree fell on the four-door Chevy Silverado driven by their father, Richard. Their mother, Elizabeth, was the front-seat passenger and both were killed instantly. Fourteen-year-old Theodore and 11-year-old Pierce were in the back seat of the truck, and first-responders on the scene in Mendham were profoundly affected by …

The Mendhams' first-ever Citizens Emergency Response Team was honored at Monday evening's township committee meeting. Each of the 15 CERT members completed a 20-hour course and is now certified to help out during disasters. "They're now certified and covered by insurance to help out on our next disaster. It's a nation-wide thing, and I'm very proud to be a part of this. I'm very happy that residents stepped up and are going to help on the next one," Mendham Township Emergency Management Coordinator Evan "Buzzy" Thomas said, "And for years to come." Thomas, who also took the course and is a CERT member, said that there will be another class for the Chesters shortly. "There's been a lot of cooperation since the last storm, and this is only …

Volunteers are being sought for the Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Mendham.
During the storms of 2011 and 2012, many in Mendham Township expressed frustration and helplessness as Irene and Sandy ravaged the community. Now, for those who want to take action during the next crisis, an outlet is available. Residents can now join Mendham's Emergency Response Team as a member of CERT, the Citizen Emergency Response Team. CERT is a volunteer citizen response team trained to assist emergency responders under the direction of the OEM Coordinator in local emergencies. According to Nick Witczak, the Mendham Township Deputy Coordinator for Mendham Office of Emergency Management are looking for volunteers to attend the class and become a part of the first CERT team for the Mendhams. Evan 'Buzzy' Thomas presented with Paul Harris Award.
Last year, Mendham Township Emergency Management Coordinator Evan "Buzzy" Thomas was honored at a state dinner for his work running the shelter at the Brookside Emergency Service Building during Hurricane Irene. This year, he may have outdone himself. When Hurricane Sandy came to town, Thomas was back at it in the Brookside ESB offering food, warmth and security throughout the storm and its aftermath. At the time, Mayor Sam Tolley noted that the shelter at the Brookside ESB had been serving residents seamlessly since the storm hit and that Thomas was to be commended for his efforts. Those thoughts were echoed by residents, first responders and other officials. At Monday night's meeting of the Mendham Township Committee, Thomas was honored …
