Editor’s note: Chester Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Greco shares his experience with the devastating storm in his own words. In response to the impending devastation to be caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Chester Volunteer Fire Company, First Aid Squad, and Police Departments stood at the ready to respond to any and all emergency calls within the communities of Chester Borough and Chester Township with their joint Emergency Response Center that was established at the Chester Fire House. Accident at Route 206 and Furnace Road brings out police, emergency squad and fire department.
A silver Mercedes Benz sedan went off the road off route 206 near Furnace Road at a little before 12:30 a.m., Chester Township Police said. The Chester EMS responded to the scene to treat the one person reported to be the driver of the Mercedes. The Chester Fire Department was dispatched to the scene after being alerted to smoke at the crash site, signaling a vehicle fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. No lanes were closed due to the accident, and the car was off the roadway on the southbound side. Police declined to comment on the condition or identity of the driver due to patient status. Morris County Prosecutor's office releases details of the fatal fire fought by Chester Firefighters.

The man killed in a three-story Netcong house fire with his dog, Spike, has been identified, Morris County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Jeffrey S. Paul said in a release Wednesday. The Chester Fire Department responded to the call with their FAST team, a specially trained group of firefighters who are called in to assist interior teams and rescue them if needed. Vincent D. Regan, 77, was found on the second floor of the blaze, which took several hours and more than 100 firefighters to extinguish. The fire, which started near cardboard boxes in Regan's 10 Main Street bedroom, isn't considered suspicious, the prosecutor's office said. A few days after he combined forces of Ralston and Brookside fought a deadly fire on Woodland Road in Mendham, their neighbors in the Chester Fire Department were brought in to an overnight blaze in Netcong that claimed the life of the buildings one occupant, authorities said. The Netcong fire is the latest in a busy 2012 for the Chester Fire Department, who have battled brush fires and assisted other agencies on numerous calls, like the Browning Court fire last month. With nearly 500 calls for the Chester Fire Department, and 850 for the First Aid Squad in 2011, both volunteer groups presented their budget proposals for 2012.
Before the joint meeting of both mayors and council members, on Tuesday, Feb. 21, Chester Township Mayor Bill Cogger said what he was looking forward to the most was the interaction between two governments and volunteer entities that are working to do their best for the people they serve. After seeing the lengths to which both the volunteer Fire Department and First Aid Squad went to keep costs under control, it was clear to see why the mayor was hedging. “What you see here is one Chester,” Cogger said. “Not Borough or Township.
