Video: Deadly Woodland Road Fire, Aftermath

All is quiet two days after fatal fire destroys home and kills resident.

  What is left of the house stands quiet now. Caution tape remains, roping the area off from onlookers. But the street is empty now. A far cry from the overnight cacaphony of heavy equipment and rushed movement that punctuated the fire fighting at 59 Woodland Road on Monday morning. Ice on the lawn, and exposed gas pipe that was hurriedly shut off and a mud dampened yard show signs of the great struggle that took place here. A struggle that, despite everyone's best efforts, was lost. Resident John Beck perished in the fire, which was ruled accidental and all that remains on the site now is a shell of the home. And while the mark on the landscape is only temporary, the mark in the minds of those who were here on April 2, will remain for a …

Poll: Are You Fire Proof?

Fire destroys two residences in the region In three weeks.

  A few weeks ago, a large overnight fire on Browning Court in Mendham took the home from a man and his mother. This week, a fire on Woodland Road took a man's life. Although the unseasonably warm winter has raised the risk of brushfires in the region, authorities claim those events are not connected. According to Mendham Township Lieutenant Vito Abrusci, the fires that originated in the homes were unrelated to the weather conditions. Abrusci, who was on hand for both fires and said the Woodland Road responders had a fire hydrant reasonably close to the fire, which allowed for water to be provided quickly without having to wait for tanker trucks from other departments.  Which leads us to a poll question, how fire proof are you? Fatal Fire in Mendham Ruled Accidental

Morris County Medical Examiner says death was caused by thermal injuries and smoke inhalation.

  The results of the investigation into the cause of death for Mendham Township resident John Beck came almost as swiftly as the fire that claimed his home at 59 Woodland Road. Morris County Medical Examiner Doctor Ronald Suarez stated the cause of death as thermal injuries and smoke inhalation, and the joint investigative team ruled the fire accidental. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office Arson Unit, Major Crimes Unit, Morris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Section, Morris County Medical Examiners Office and the Mendham Township Police Department were all involved in the investigation which determined the fire started in the kitchen early this morning.  Investigators said they were able to surmize the point of origin for…

Resident Killed in Fire, Home Destroyed

Mendham resident John Beck was killed in a fire that destroyed his Woodland Road home late Sunday night.  Beck, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene by Morris County Medical Examiner Doctor Ronald Suarez, according to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office Arson Unit, Major Crimes Unit, Morris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Section, Morris County Medical Examiners Office and the Mendham Township Police Department are all jointly investigating the incident, it said. A preliminary determination shows the fire started in the kitchen, the prosecutor's office said.
