Bear Bounds Through Mendham, Still Loose

Black bear has been spotted in the area for the past couple weeks.

Last month, a bear who took a stroll through Parsippany was relocated to Chester and residents caught a furry neighbor walking through their area, but this morning a bear bounding through Brookside caught the attention of drivers on Cold Hill Road. Mendham-Chester Patch was tweeted the pic in the story from Val Edwards Monday morning who saw the bear during her morning commute. According to Mendham Township Police Lt. Vito Abrusci, a resident reported the bear sighting more than an hour after it happened at 8:30 a.m. and although Abrusci did search the area, he turned up nothing. Bear Spotted on Delwood Road in Chester Twp.

Chester Township Police respond to report of a black bear moving through residents' yards.

Olive are also cautioned to be aware of the animal. Officials remind residents not to approach the bear and gave a list of bear safety reminders from Division of Fish and Wildlife. Black bears by nature tend to be wary of people. However, if you encounter a black bear in your neighborhood or outdoors while hiking or camping, follow these common-sense safety tips. Since the 1980s…

Bear Tranquilized After Visiting Parsippany Business Complex

The yearling was released in a park in Chester Township.

A bear seen Thursday at Parsippany's Octagon 10 office complex at 1719 Route 10 is now living in a wooded park in Chester Township. Parsippany Police report that officers including Bear Officer Michael Ruggier were dispatched to the complex after gettting a call that a black bear was spotted in the courtyard just off Route 10, which is surrounded by business buildings on three sides. The bear was not aggressive, police said. Ruggiero and the other specially trained “bear officers” generally use a system called "adverse conditioning," which employs loud sounds and tracking to encourage bears to leave areas populated by humans. If those methods don't work, officers resort to firing non-lethal (and, police said, minimally painful) rubber buck…
