Chester Man Calls Out Officials Post Storm

Dangerous conditions and accountability concerns prompt a letter to the mayor of Chester Township.

Editor's note: The following is a letter to Bill Cogger, the Mayor of Chester Township the author requested be shared as a letter to the editor. Attached to this post is a photograph taken outside my home, the intersection of Rt. 24 and Twinbrooks Trail on Nov. 8, some 10 days after the storm. What I witnessed this morning is something I never thought I see in America, much less in Chester, NJ, school children stepping over downed power lines to get on a school bus.   Say what you want about daily contact with JCP&L, conference calls with the Governor, and posting to Twitter, the fact that our Chester school children had to carefully step over downed power lines to catch the bus says more about the response to this storm that all of the …

Chester Twp Mayor Asks For Resident's Help

Chester Township Mayor Bill Cogger tells residents to contact the NJ Bureau of Public Utility.

Dear Chester Township Residents, Those of us without power continue to remain frustrated with the poor response of JCP&L. While Sandy remains the storm of a lifetime JCP&L's inability to respond to our needs with accurate and timely information is simply incomprehensible. I will need all of your help by writing/emailing the NJ Bureau of Public Utility (BPU) and expressing our frustration with JCP&L. This is the single most important action we can take to insure that we will not have to live through a situation like this again. Remember to emphasize that it should not be us the ratepayers who should bear the burden for JCP&L's lack of maintenance and antiquated systems but their shareholders who have been receiving the profits. Chester …

Frelinghuysen Letter Thanks 11th District Voters

Republican congressman applauds constituent's efforts that helped get him re-elected.

I am writing to thank the voters of the 11th Congressional District for supporting my re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.  I am pleased now to represent many new constituents in Essex, Passaic and Sussex Counties in January.  My heart goes out to those who are in need and to so many who were able to vote Tuesday and keep their community and America strong, despite incredible obstacles.  Our focus in Congress continues to be jobs and the economy, getting people back to work, government “out of their way,” lowering taxes, and creating a climate where small businesses can survive and flourish. That effort needs to be bipartisan.  I am grateful to the voters of the new 11th Congressional District who have allowed me to continue …

In Sandy's Wake, Take Election Day By Storm

Be sure to cast your vote as an unprecedented NJ election unfolds following historic storm.

There is an election on Tuesday. Who cares? Everyone should care. It's the big presidential balloting, comes around only once every four years. There's one U.S. Senate and all House seats up. Two statewide ballot questions. Three state Assembly seats, including one in District 26 that covers Parsippany and other parts of Morris County. County freeholders. mayors and council members. And, for the first time in a November, school board members—the majority of districts throughout the state pushed their school elections to November to eliminate the public vote on the budget. All of this is central to our democracy. And everyone should get out and vote. But it's the last thing on the minds of many people, and who can blame them. They're still …

Chester to Hold School During Convention Days

Superintendent Christina Vanwoert says teachers willing to work on previously scheduled off days.

Good Evening Parents and Staff, I wanted to update you as to the situation in the Chester School District. A decision on whether or not we can open school on Monday will be made on Sunday afternoon and an alert will be sent at that time. At present, it does not look likely that the schools will be able to open as they are still without power and many obstacles are present along the roads in the borough and township. Student safety is our highest priority, but I remain optimistic that we will get back to school soon. In addition, full school days will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8 and Friday, Nov. 9. We were previously scheduled to be closed on these days for the NJEA Convention. I am grateful to the Chester Education Association Members who …

Mendham Intends To Hold Class on Convention Dates

Mendham Township Superintendent Sal Constantino says the district plans to hold class during the days allotted for the NJEA convention.

Dear Residents, On behalf of the Mendham Township School District, its employees and Board of Education, I hope that this note finds you and your family safe and secure during this unprecedented storm and its aftermath. This update is intended to offer information as to how we intend to proceed and limit the disruption to the educational process underway this school year. First and foremost, we will continue to do our best to keep our parents informed in a timely fashion based on the information we receive from our Police Department and the N.J. Office of Emergency Management. Currently, both schools do not have power. While Township workers are doing an amazing job of clearing debris from roads making them passable, it is still a …

It isn't a matter of effort, it is a matter of choice. There is limited space for the headline, so when there isn't space for Borough or Township, or Boro of Twp it is included in the dek which always sent with the headline. :-) As you can see, it begins with "Mendham Township Superintendent" thanks for the comment, and I hope you managed ok during the storm.   more ›

Regional Schools Chief: No Perfect Decision Exists

West Morris Regional School District Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast has a message to parents and students after Hurricane Sandy.

Dear Parents and Guardians, It is my hope that all of the families of the West Morris Regional High School District are safe and secure. To the best of my ability, I have toured our five communities and many neighborhoods. The damage to each town is extensive. Aside from the loss of power, there are hundreds of closed streets, impassable walkways, and downed wires.  It is an unsafe environment. Additionally, JCP&L has reported 70% of Morris County residents still do not have power. Luckily, the structural damage to our high schools is minimal, although the buildings are without electricity or heat. While I know there are important concerns such as college application deadlines, marking period assessments and athletic events, our priority …

Is It Too Soon for Christmas Shopping?

It's not even Halloween yet and some stores are already putting up Christmas decorations. Is it too soon to deck the halls or are you ready for the 2012 Holiday Season to begin?

It's an annual question for merchants and shoppers: How soon is too soon to deck the malls and shopping centers for the Christmas holiday season? Some stores have already begun the process. Christmas music, decorations and layaway ads can already been seen in the shopping aisle at local stores. Halloween decorations still dominate, but signs of Christmas are already creeping in. So what do you think? When is too early for the Christmas shopping season to begin? Do the decorations and Christmas ads entice you to buy early or make you grit your teeth and wish for more time before the holiday rush begins?

Student Says Vote for $750M Bond Act Vital

County College of Morris student explains benefit of Building Our Future bond on November ballot.

Dear Editor, On Nov. 6, New Jersey voters will be asked to approve the first major investment in New Jersey college facilities in 24 years. The Building Our Future Bond Act, which will be on the ballot as “Question 1,” would provide $750 million in capital improvements for academic and research facilities at the state’s 49 colleges and universities. The funds would be targeted for academic buildings and could not be used to construct sports facilities or dormitories. Also, each college is required to match the funds they receive by 25 percent. As a college student, I am confident this investment will help prepare New Jersey students for the global marketplace; attract businesses, innovators and entrepreneurs; and power the state’s economy …

Do Not Call List Enforcement Receives No Answer

Complaints skyrocket and agency charged with enforcing the law looks to public for a solution.

There are just two weeks until Election Day. Recent polls would indicate New Jersey has no real contests, which could save residents from those oh-so-annoying robocalls hawking this candidate or that one. But don't count on it.  It seems like the political robocalls come no matter what. Just like the telemarketers. The difference is that political calls are permitted—of course, politicians passed the law—but traditional telemarketing isn't, at least not from companies with which a person has no business relationship. And commercial robocalls are altogether illegal unless a person has given permission to receive them. The most recent data from the Federal Trade Commission, charged with enforcing the law, show complaints ballooning—there …

I suspect an investigation would find that telemarketers make large campaign contributions, which is why there is no enforcement of the DNC list. Ah, America! The best government money can buy! If you really want to end telemarketing, execute a few telemarketers (the big guys, not the poor schmucks manning the phones). It will come to a screeching halt.   more ›
