Table Talk: Answer to Reader's Question

This Table Talk responds to a readers question by reviewing the movie Guilt Trip.

Question: Have you seen any of the Holiday released movies with your family?

Dear Reader,

Based on coming attractions we saw Guilt Trip. Guilt Trip is a story about a mom and her grown son. They live on opposite coasts. Through numerous cell phone calls she stays in overbearingly close touch with him.  He is about to embark on a journey cross country to sell a product he has invented. He starts this trip with a quick visit to mom and through unexpected circumstances ends up inviting her on this road trip.

Genre: Comedy   Rated: PG-13

Running Time: 1 hour and 35 minutes

In attendance were my 20-year-old daughter, 14-year-old son, my husband and myself. This movie evoked different opinions depending on your generation and gender.

  • I loved it.  I have been a huge Streisand fan since Funny Girl. I must admit I walked in with the preconceived notion that I was going to love it and I was not disappointed. Having a grown child living on her own, I could fully relate to Barbara in this role.

I know this movie is getting negative reviews. I believe it is because it is appealing to a niche audience. Being part of that targeted audience I found
it really entertaining.

  • My daughter enjoyed Guilt Trip.  She laughed throughout the movie and really liked the story line.  Being my daughter, I believe she connected with the son in this movie.
  • My son tolerated this movie. He wasn’t drawn into the story line, however I did notice him laugh more than once or twice.
  • My husband felt “it was better than Hope Springs.”  His opinion was that it is a cute movie with very good acting. However, he did not think it was memorable and actually stated by next week he would not remember it.
