Mendham Band Makes History as Top Scorer at Regional Competition

High school's Wind Ensemble to perform at State Concert Band Gala.

As good as gold.

That could be the Mendham High School Wind Ensemble’s new slogan after earning a gold rating for the second straight year at the Region 1 Concert Band Festival recently.

The group also won awards for outstanding brass, outstanding percussion, and outstanding soloist. It doesn’t come as much surprise, however, as the Wind Ensemble is the top-auditioned concert band and one of three concert bands at the school.

There were 32 bands at the three-day festival, according to Mendham High School teacher Tim Beadle. Mendham High School earned the highest score in the festival.

As a result, the band has been selected as an honor band for the National Band Association’s New Jersey State Gala at Rutgers University on Sunday, May 4. Mendham will join the two top scoring bands from central and southern New Jersey, Beadle said.

The weekend event and ensuing honor is history for Mendham, as it’s the first time the band has taken the top score in the region and first time in district history the band has been invited to play at the State Concert Band Gala.
