Chester Schools to Hold Special Meeting on Possible Make Up Days

Wednesday's day off marks final inclement weather day built into school calendar.

Sledding, sleeping in, making snowmen. Snow days are an age-old fun time for kids. But if Chester students want to keep their spring break or get out of school on time in June, they better hope the snow stops falling.

As of Wednesday, when Morris County was hit with its second winter storm in the same week, the Chester School District used its fourth and final allotted inclement weather day.

The administration and board of education have taken action, though and will hold a special meeting Friday morning at 8 a.m. The purpose of the meeting is to potentially amend the school calendar.

Because the district has yet to exceed its inclement weather day allotment, a decision is likely to be made on a “what if” more bad weather comes this way, according to business administrator MaryJane Canose.

“The meeting on Friday is to decide which days to add to the calendar if  we have more snow days,” Canose said.

Chester’s calendar offers nine days off between now and the last day of school, scheduled for Tuesday, June 24. Three days are set aside in February from the 17 to 19 for Presidents’ Day; five more from April 14 to 18 for spring break; and one on Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day.

The first week of February wreaked havoc on the district, needing two closures and a two-hour delayed opening in the first three days.
