Highlands Council Opens Executive Director Spot for Applications

Deputy director has expressed interest, but all applications to be considered, report says.

The oft-embattled and politically-charged Highlands Council, which represents the state and meets in Chester Township, is looking for applicants to fill it executive director role four months after the position opened. 

According to nj.com, a job announcement lists Aug. 6 as the deadline to apply for the spot, formerly held by Gene Feyl, who retired effective April 1. Feyl abruptly announced is departure just 22 months into his tenure. The former Morris County Freeholder succeeded Eileen Swan, who was removed by the council in 2012.

Another former freeholder, Margaret Nordstrom, is currently the interim executive director. Prior to that she was the deputy director.

Feyl was earning $116,000 when he retired. Nordstrom has expressed interest in the top spot, but the council chairman said all applications would be considered, the report said.

The Highlands Council is tasked with overseeing the development of land across 860,000 acres in New Jersey and protecting half of the state’s water supply.
