New Jersey Highlands Council executive director Gene Feyl announced he will be stepping down less than two years after being appointed to the post.

Feyl’s appointment occurred under a cloud of controversy in August 2012, as skeptics claimed he did not have enough experience for the post. The former Denville councilman was backed by Governor Chris Christie for the state agency.

He was approved by a 8-7 vote.

No word on who his replacement will be has been made.

The Highlands Council ensures the Highlands Act, created in 2004, is enforced by restricting development across northern New Jersey and providing water to half the state's residents. The Act encompasses 860,000 acres.
