Rash of Car Break-Ins Hits the Mendhams, Police Urge Residents to Lock Vehicles

A multi-town investigation has been launched after a rash of car break-ins has hit the area, most recently in the Mendhams.

Sunday night into Monday morning, seven vehicles stretched across four driveways in Mendham Township were entered, Lt. Ross Johnson told Patch. Items taken include money and electronics.

In Mendham Borough, more than a dozen vehicles were broken into over the past week, Police Chief Pasquale Libertino said.

Both departments said the vehicles entered were unlocked and urge residents to not only close all windows and lock all vehicle doors, but to remove items from the vehicle as well.

Johnson said he believes the recent Mendham Township break-ins occurred between midnight and 5 a.m. The break-ins aren’t confined to western Morris County, however, as multiple towns have been hit recently, Johnson said.

Bernards Township has been hit with more than 30 break-ins over the past six weeks, Johnson said, and surrounding towns like Morris Township and Morristown are assisting in investigations.

Police urge residents that if they see anything suspicious to call their local police department with as much information as possible immediately.
