Drunk Driver Crashed Into Mendham Home, Cops Say

Mendham Borough man charged with driving while intoxicated.

A 27-year-old Mendham Borough man was allegedly drunk when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a home on Cold Hill Road Tuesday night, Mendham Township Police said. 

According to Lt. Vito Abrusci, Matthew Bell was on his way home traveling eastbound on Mountainside Road just before midnight when the accident occurred.

"He failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Cold Hill Road, went across the grass and struck the porch of a Cold Hill Road home," Abrusci said.

According to Abrusci, Bell's Jetta did not cause significant damage to the home.

"There was minor damage to the porch and the house," Abrusci said. "The people were able to stay in the home."

Abrusci said there were no injuries in the accident, but Bell was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Bell was later released into a relative's custody, Abrusci said. 

The Mendham Township Fire Department and First Aid Squad responded to the scene along with the Mendham Borough Fire Department, Abrusci said.
