Cell Phone Use a Factor in Route 206 Crash, Cops Say

Mendham man sent to hospital after being struck by oncoming car, police report.

A Mount Arlington man using a handheld device while driving on Route 206 Monday crashed into another vehicle, sending the motorist to the hospital, Chester Township Police said.

Jeremy Fletcher, 32, was heading south on Rt. 206 near the intersection of Hillsdale Avenue just before 3 p.m. Monday when he crossed over the double yellow line, causing a collision between the two vehicles, Lt. Tom Williver said.

Fletcher struck Anthony Sarno, 63, of Mendham, who was traveling north on the roadway, Williver said. Sarno was sent to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.

The use of Fletcher’s cell phone was a contributing factor in the crash, Williver said. The crash caused delays in the area and altered traffic, as originally reported by Patch.

During an investigation, it was learned Fletcher had a $1,500 outstanding warrant from Rockaway, a $39 municipal court warrant from Bound Brook, and a no bail warrant from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
