Mendham Firefighter, First Aid Member Dies at 90

Joseph Grassi was a World War II veteran honored with a Purple Heart.

One of Mendham’s oldest residents, Joseph Grassi, a lifelong member of the community, died at the age of 90.

Grassi passed away at Holly Manor Center on Dec. 31, according to his obituary.

Grassi was born in the borough on July 18, 1923, and served in the 11th Airborne Division Company 188 during World War II from1943 to 1946. Grassi received a Purple Heart for his courage in battle.

After the war Grassi became a Bricklayer-Mason worker for the Bricklayers Craftworkers Union Local No. 4 in Fairfield. He retired in 1993 after 33 years of employment.

Grassi was a longtime member of the Mendham Independent Hook and Ladder Company and Mendham First Aid Squad. He also was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Mendham Pastime Club.

Grassi is survived by his wife, Agatha, two sons, one daughter, two brothers and a number of grandchildren.
