Irwin Would Have 'Common Sense' Approach for School Board, Resident Says

Chester resident supports BOE challenger for various reasons on Election Day.

Dear Editor,

I support Judy Irwin’s candidacy for the Chester School Board. Judy has a business and paralegal background, is a dedicated parent and a volunteer in her community.  She is a competent individual who cares about our community and is not afraid to rock the boat.

Not only does she take a common sense approach to things, but she listens to other parents’ concerns and will continually look for ways to improve the visibility of the board and improve the interaction and communication with the parents in the district.

Judy believes in a holistic approach to education and is committed to the success of each and every child in our community. Today, the prevailing wisdom is to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses which she fully supports and believes should be expanded, however we must simultaneously strengthen the basics.  One example, our school district has eliminated the full cursive curriculum.  Well, the pendulum is swinging back the other way nationally and many school districts have now reinstated the full curriculum.

Judy would also like to start a dialogue about the length of the school day. Would Chester students benefit academically from a longer school day?  Also, in order to better prepare our children for high school, she supports fully aligning Mendham’s curriculum and best practices with Chester’s.  For these and for other reasons, I am voting for Judy Irwin.
