Chester Mayor Not Running for Re-Election, 4 Candidates Vie for 2 Council Seats

Janet Hoven will run unopposed in June primary for borough's mayoral seat; two Chester Township incumbents will be unchallenged.

The Primary Election in June will be anything but quiet in Chester Borough, as ballots will have a bevy of choices for residents in the small town.

Former councilwoman Janet Hoven has tossed her hat into the ring and filed to run for the three-year mayoral term. She won’t be opposed by incumbent Mayor Bob Davis, as he did not file to run for re-election.

Hoven let her term as a councilwoman expire in 2013 without running for re-election. She was replaced by Karen Ferrone, who ran unopposed in November. Davis told Patch in the spring of 2013 he was unsure if he would seek another term as mayor.

Four residents, including two incumbents, have filed to run for election in the June 3 vote, as two women will face off against two men for three-year seats on the town’s council.

Incumbents Timothy Iversen and Gary Marshuetz will be opposed by newcomers Melinda Scotti and Laura Aleshevich Schurter. All four are registered Republicans.

Residents will vote for two of the four candidates who will then move on to the November General Election ballot. There they could be potentially opposed by any Independent or Democratic challengers who garner enough write-in votes at the June Election.

Over in Chester Township the voting booths will be a little less heated, as incumbent committeemen Matt Kass and Dan O’Donnell have both filed to run for re-election and will be unopposed.

That doesn’t mean the November vote won’t be free of fireworks like it was in 2013, when Independent Michael Colannino ran against Mayor Bill Cogger in what became a contentious battle.
