Centenarian Visits Provident Greenville Branch to View Mural Painted by Her Uncle in 1967

(Jersey City, NJ) July 14, 2014—Emma Fiorentino of Chester, NJ, a former Jersey City resident who is turning 102 this month, recently visited The Provident Bank’s Greenville branch to admire a mural painted by her uncle, Charles Renzulli, in 1967. Joined by her daughter, Nancy Healy, Fiorentino wanted to see the artwork one more time before the bank donates it (with her permission) to the Hudson County Community College’s Art Museum later this year.

According to family members, Renzulli, an immigrant from Melfi, Italy and resident of Jersey City most of his life, painted various murals and presented them to multiple banks throughout the city. Each mural was indigenous to a specific neighborhood. The one pictured is from the Greenville Section of Jersey City and depicts the old Morris Canal. Titled, “Morris Canal: ‘Red Bridge’ – Circa 1887,” the mural was on display at Provident’s Greenville branch for more than four decades.

Fiorentino said she was reminded of the mural when she saw news coverage of The Provident Bank’s 175th Anniversary earlier this year.
