Chester Master to Lead Jr. Taekwondo Olympians

Jung T. Jeon named coach of New Jersey Junior Taekwondo Olympic Team.

The New Jersey Junior Olympics Taekwondo Team is scheduled to compete later this month in Dallas, Texas as part of the Junior Olympic Games.

And they'll be bringing a piece of Chester with them.

Master Jung T. Jeon, a coach with the U.S. National Taekwondo Championship New Jersey State Team for the past three years, has been named as head coach to the team, according to a press release from Master Jeon Taekwondo, located in Chester.

Jeon is a six-degree black belt and has a long history of leadership in the taekwondo arena, the statement said. Jeon's Chester business was established in 2002, and he has served as a coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and at Princeton University for thier taekwondo programs.

Jeon is also an international and USA-certified referee for the sport, and was voted "Best Referee" at the 2011 Pan Am International Championships, the release said.

He's also been recognized by the World Taekwondo Headquarters and KUKKIWON with citations for excellence in 2011 and 2012.

Jeon is a native of Korea, also the birth place of taekwondo, and moved to America in 1997.

“I discovered quickly upon arriving in the U.S. that, although taekwondo is a globally-practiced martial art, the U.S. and Korean cultures differ in many respects and this has a great impact on how students are taught,” Master Jeon said. “In order to be able to effectively teach taekwondo to students here, I had to learn how to deliver the messages and teach the principles of the art in a way they could be both heard and understood. This took a great deal of patience, listening, and learning about the U.S. culture along the way but I believe these lessons have made me a far better teacher,”

The 2012 Junior Olympic games will be held June 28 through July 5 in Dallas, Texas at the Dallas Convention Center.
