Love Laughs: Jim Breuer Takes on Marriage at Local Church

Comedian will join Mendham Hills Community Church pastor during series about trials and tribulations of marriage.

It’s not often comedians who appeared in movies and on Saturday Night Live end up giving talks about marriage at a local church, but Jim Breuer isn’t your average celebrity.

The Chester resident is well known for supporting his community’s efforts, including fundraisers at The Hive in Chester and supporting the police benevolence association.

Breuer is about to tackle something even closer to home – his marriage.

The comedian will join Pastor John Isemann of Mendham Hills Community Church over the course of the next month during a series about marriage titled “I Really Do” on May 4, 11, 25 and June 1 to discuss his own marriage and how to help partners get through the tough times with a few laughs. Breuer will not be part of the sermon on May 18.

“Getting at the issues (of marriage) can sometimes be a bit awkward or uncomfortable sitting next to our spouse in church,” Isemann said. “Yet, the truth is that most of us experience the same tensions, struggles, even arguments in our homes. Jim is going to help us to laugh at ourselves and ease that tension so we can look at an incredibly serious topic without taking ourselves so seriously.”

Isemann said the comedian’s assistance will put a new spin on a more traditional topic in the church, likely reaching a wider audience.

“It’s not exactly shocking that a church would do a sermon series on marriage,” Isemann said. “What Jim brings to our discussion and to our community is not the presumed sermon of a pastor but the wit and wisdom of a normal guy and a celebrity who values marriage at the same level.”

Mendham Hills Community Church is located at 480 Route 24 in Chester (GPS directions are 1 Old Mill Road), and two service times are available at 8:30 and 10 a.m. each Sunday.
