Adults and High School Singers Invited
World music, spirituals, Appalachian and other traditional folk settings, along with historical choral repertoire from both eastern and western traditions, are all part of the musical scene on Sunday mornings at Brookside Community Church! With a total weekly time commitment of only 8:30 AM to noon each Sunday, singers receive vocal training and instruction in sight singing from conductor Deborah Simpkin King, in addition to experience with an eclectic and lively choral repertoire. The choir is open to adults and high school students from the community who love to sing! Neither church membership nor audition is necessary.
Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, choral and vocal performer and teacher active most prominently in the Manhattan and northern New Jersey area, came to Brookside Community Church (BCC) as director of its adult choir in January of 2013. “Our choir is a warm and friendly bunch and although we all work hard to achieve good results, we also have a lot of fun,” says alto Judy Pennoyer. Bass Frank Vigilante comments: “Singing in the choir is absolutely one of my favorite times of the week! It provides a socially warm but cognitively challenging environment.”
Dr. King adds that she values the “open, inclusive spirit of the church, where individuals from many faith backgrounds can find a loving and accepting place to worship. Making music in an atmosphere of openness is a joyful experience!”
Beyond her work at BCC, Dr. King is Artistic Director and Founder of the renowned choral ensemble Schola Cantorum on Hudson, and of its international initiative in support of new choral music, PROJECT : ENCORE™. Dr. King is honored to serve with Kent Tritle as Co-Chair of the New York Choral Consortium, and has coordinated the annual High School Choral Festival for the NJ Chapter of the American Choral Directors’ Association since 1995. She is owner of voice and conducting studios and is a frequent clinician and guest conductor. The thread of continuity that connects Dr. King’s varied professional activities is her fundamental belief that music is a gift that contains the potential for profound impact on the human spirit, providing lifelong nurture.
Individuals wishing to inquire about singing are invited to call the Music Office at 973-543-0919 or reach out to Dr. King directly at DeborahKing@BrooksideChurch.org.
