MENDHAM -- Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ11) is scheduled to appear at the 4th annual NJ Walks for TS at Mendham on Saturday, November 23, at Borough Park, the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome & Associated Disorders (NJCTS) has announced.
Congressman Frelinghuysen will address those in attendance, expected to number 400 or more, and speak about his support of New Jersey's large, growing Tourette Syndrome community. Tourette Syndrome is an inherited, misdiagnosed, misunderstood neurological disorder characterized by involuntary sounds and movements known as tics, and affects 1 in 100 children and adults.
The Congressman's support of Tourette Syndrome is well-noted over the past several years. He has met with NJCTS and District 11 constituents affected by TS, twice signed on as a co-sponsor to the proposed Collaborative Academic Research Efforts for Tourette Syndrome Act and is a member of the Honorary Committee for NJ Walks for TS at Mendham.
"The New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome thanks Congressman Frelinghuysen fo his extensive support of the TS community,” NJCTS Executive Director Faith W. Rice said. “It is my hope that many of his constituents, as well as other families from all over New Jersey, join him in standing up for kids with TS by being a part of NJ Walks For TS at Mendham on November 23.”
The walk exists as a funding mechanism for NJCTS' innovative, unique School In-Service Program. All proceeds from this year's event will benefit this program, which educates students and teachers at schools in every corner of New Jersey about Tourette Syndrome, self-advocacy and anti-bullying initiatives, among many other topics. This vital program costs NJCTS more than $70,000 each year.
This year's event -- which will kick off at 9 a.m. November 23 with registration and check-in, followed by the walk at 10 a.m. -- will feature a 50/50 raffle, silent action, registration and donation prizes, a live local smooth rock band and activities for kids, including face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon animals and much more.
