Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medal will be presented to 14 veterans this year.
Fourteen local veterans will be recognized at the annual Morris County Memorial Day ceremony on Friday. The ceremony, which is sponsored by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, will begin at noon on the lawn in front of the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown. Speaking at the event will be Hjalmar Johansson, a WWII Army Air Force veteran from Montville who was held as a German Prisoner of War after being captured when his B-24 Liberator was shot down in Czechoslovakia in 1944. John Reed Sr., of Hackettstown, will be one of three Navy veterans recognized with a Morris County Distinguished Service Medal, along with Philip Gigante and John Callahan of Montville. Those working to preserve Morris County history had something to be proud of last week when the state recognized two county preservation projects currently underway. Gov. Chris Christie's administration and the state Department of Environmental Protection Historic Preservation Office recognized several projects in honor of New Jersey's National Preservation Month at an awards ceremony in Flemington in conjunction with the New Jersey Historic Sites Council. Among those honored were the Picatinny Arsenal historic districts website project and the Morris County Cultural Resources Inventory (CRI) application. The 2013 municipal budget is the first municipal tax levy increase in three years.
The 2013 municipal budget, which for the first time in three years has increased the municipal tax levy, represented by a .6 cent increase, was adopted on Monday evening. The operating budget totals $8,964,402, which is an increase of just under 1.5%. The rise will result in a tax rate of $.340 per $100 assessed valuation. The result to the average home, valued at $912,202, will be $54.55. Morris County Women's Republican Club hosting annual forum on May 21 in Morristown.

On Tuesday, May 21, the Morris County Women’s Republican Club, along with the Morris Township Republican County Committee, will join forces to host a night with all the candidates. “The public will have the opportunity to write questions on postcards that will be asked by the moderator to all candidates in the appropriate category,” the Women’s Republican Club said in a statement. The event will be held at the Masonic Lodge in Morristown at 39 Maple Avenue at 7 p.m. Candidates will make themselves available after the forum as well, the statement said.

'MedReturn' units allow prescription drug disposal at police departments.
Thanks to county law enforcement, there's now a permanent option for those who need to safely dispose of prescription drugs. The Community Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Morris will thank Morris County law enforcement for giving citizens a safe and secure place to dispose unwanted or expired prescription drugs with a luncheon at noon Friday at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s School of Pharmacy in Florham Park. There are now 16 "MedReturn" stand-alone units around the county into which expired or unused meds can be dropped. The units are firmly fixed to a secure surface in a police station, where they are monitored 24/7 and are checked regularly, with the items collected then properly destroyed. Governing body must decide which roads need attention.
Chester Borough officials are mulling which municipal roads are in most need of attention. Borough engineer shared a laundry list of potential repairs last week with the mayor and council. The good news, according to Mayor Bob Davis, is that Chester Borough has been awarded an $80,000 grant for improvements to Old Gladstone Road by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Ferriero added that the grant will not cover the entire project, since the total cost for Old Gladstone Road will be about $100,000. “I’m pretty happy that we got that,” Ferriero said. “That’s one road we’ll be working on in the future.” Ferriero began his presentation with a list from 2010 that included the worst-rated roads in the borough. The Morris View Healthcare Center will host a free program for veterans on May 30.
Veterans put their lives on the line for our country and when they return, it's sometimes difficult for them to get back on their feet and re-join society. Morris View Healthcare Center in Morris Township will host a veterans program, “How to Make the Most of Your Veterans Benefit,” from 2 to 3 p.m. May 30. Morris View resident veterans, families and community members are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided. The program will be presented by Hospice of New Jersey, with the agency’s social work supervisor Hannah Fisher as the featured speaker. Fisher has a masters in social work from Fordham University.

For the next two weeks, there will not be the usual flag flying in front of the county courthouse.
For the next two weeks, don't be alarmed if you don't see the usual flags flying in front of the county courthouse. The flagpole on the front lawn of the Morris County Courthouse on Washington Street in Morristown will be painted this weekend and will need about two weeks to cure. Morris County officials want the public to know that flags will not be flying from the flagpole during that time. In the interim, however, an American flag will be placed outside of the front entrance to the courthouse during regular business hours. Flags will again be flown as soon as the flagpole is ready.
