Wild Winter: Elixirs and Spices from the Native Garden
Schiff Nature Preserve, 339 Pleasant Valley Rd, Mendham, NJ | Get Directions »
$5.00
The winter landscape can appear so stark and barren… Each winter we turn to our spice rack and medicine cabinet for warming, aromatic spices and remedies to ease cold-season complaints. Imagine yourself a homesteader, miles away from the market and doctor -- what if you had to rely on the wild for food or medicine? Join Rachel Mackow for a light-hearted excursion into winter survival, and see whether bounty still exists beneath crackling leaves and in wind-swept branches. Rachel will highlight traditional uses of native and non-native plants, including edible and medicinal species, in this indoor slide presentation and an easy guided hike to explore the winter landscape for our native edibles. Rachel Mackow is a writer, photographer, and land steward. She authors the blog, The Shagbark Speaks. She and her family live in the Sourlands where they tend native edible and medicinal plants for their nursery, Wild Ridge Plants.
