5 Cars a Mother Would Love

With Mom's big day this weekend, we look at family-style sedans and minivans for sale in Morris County.

Mother's Day is Sunday, and so our thoughts are filled with maternal memories. Moms do it all—bringing home the bacon, frying it in the proverbial pan, cleaning the house, schlepping the kids. She deserves a nice ride, don't you think? Now, many of us can't afford to get our female parent an elegant and reliable sedan or SUV that boasts subtle style yet holds her offspring and their equally rambunctious friends and their scads of junk, but it's nice to ponder. And for those who can produce the necessary scratch, think about what memorable Mama has done for you and check out these babies. This week's installment of 5 Cars is devoted to cars we imagine our own wonderful mother would love. We're not mentioning this to her, however, because we…

JCP&L Donates $5K to Local Food Pantry

The employees also donated 1,000 pounds of food to the Interfaith Food Pantry.

During tough economic times, those that are down on their luck often times find it hard to get food on the table. That's where the Interfaith Food Pantry comes in. The Interfaith Food Pantry is a non-denominational non-profit organization that provides food and groceries to Morris County families in need. Recently, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) helped support the pantry with a $5,000 donation. Last year, the pantry fell on hard times because a 13 percent increase from May through July in demand for food staples had nearly stripped the pantry of supplies. But local companies are stepping up to help out.  JCP&L employees held bake sales and luncheons, collected food items and donated cash during the recently completed 2013 "Harvest …

Hospital scored as having higher number of patients develop blood clots than average scored facility, but fewer falls and traumas.

When ranked along with more than 2,000 general hospitals in the country, Morristown Medical Center received a "C" grade on a newly released report card from Hospital Safety Score. Data shows the hospital was scored as having a higher number of patients who develop blood clots than in the average scored hospital. However, Morristown Medical Center reported fewer falls and traumas than the average hospital and fewer accidental cuts or tears from medical treatment. The hospital scored higher than the average hospital for its leadership structures and systems, identifications and mitigation of risks and hazards, nurse workforce and more.  "Atlantic Health System, parent organization of Morristown Medical Center, is committed to providing the …

BTW, I really think it is terrible how these hospitals that were founded decades ago as a memorial tribute to people are now dropping the word "memorial" from their names. Chilton was founded by a Pompton Plains doctor because the nearest hospitals were in Paterson and Passaic -- and it was named in honor of the doctor's son who was shot down over Europe with the US Army Air Corps.   more ›

Turkey Farm Fate Concerns Chester Residents

Subcommittee meets with CVS representatives.

At the urging of an e-mail telling them to attend the May 7 meeting of the Chester Borough Mayor and Council, a group of residents came to hear an update on the seemingly endless debate on the future of the Larison's Corner Property. But while they were expecting a decision or a next step in the process to be taken, what they were told was the subcommittee continues to explore its options.   “We had another meeting last week and we have schedules set up for various different conversations,” said borough attorney Brian Mason, adding that at the last meeting, the subcommittee was introduced to a representative of a realty corporation that finds locations for CVS stores. “The committee is investigating facts and will make a presentation to …

'We Are With' Boston T-Shirt Aids Bombing Victims

David D. Hammar Foundation of Long Valley selling apparel to aid those impacted by terrorist attack April 15.

The bombings that marred the 2013 Boston Marathon claimed three lives and wounded or maimed hundreds of others. Support from within Boston as well as across the country has poured in, lending aid to victims and their families. That outpouring of support, along with previous successes in fundraising, has led the David D. Hammar Foundation of Long Valley to join the efforts and give to a general fund established by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick called One Fund. Success for the foundation came in the form of t-shirt sales after Super Storm Sandy ravaged the New Jersey shore, when it sold apparel emblazoned with the words Jersey Strong and Ortley Beach Rise Up. “Those efforts really opened a lot of doors for the foundation to help fund …

Chester Movie Theater Out, Gym In

Clearview Cinemas at the Chester Springs Mall closes May 19. Nitroflex Gym to open in its place in August.

The days of the long lines bending down the windy corridor past the old Art of Dance Studio in one direction and past the Ho Ho Kitchen in the other direction on opening night are long gone. But the Clearview Cinema 6 Theater in Chester has been a part of the community for more than three decades, and on May 19, the end credits roll. The confirmation of the closing comes on the heels of an announcement that Cablevision had succeeded in selling its Clearview Cinema Theaters chain. Last week, Bow Tie Cinemas of Ridgefield, Conn., announced it has purchased 41 Clearview Cinema theaters from Cablevision. Cablevision bought the cinemas in 1998 and put the chain up for sale last year; Clearview currently has 26 theaters in New Jersey.  According…
