Voting ends Monday and the race is close.

Votes are came in via e-mail, Facebook, voicemail and comments and we are happy to announce our final four entries to Mendham and Chester's Person of the Year.

Our nominees are (in no particular order):

1. Evan "Buzzy" Thomas, for his work during the storm and the aftermath as Mendham Township's office of emergency management coordinator.

2. Dr. Christina VanWoert, superintendent of the Chester Consolidated School District, who was praised for constant communication with parents, staff and students during times of crisis.

3. Noreen Staples, who was nominated for her charity work in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

4. The Sisters of Christian Charity, who many Mendham Borough residents credited for providing them a home away from home when things were at their bleakest and darkest.

The nominations seem to focus around crisis management for 2012 and our top four vote getters received a lot of vocal support from the community. So now it is time to cast your vote in the poll below and choose Mendham-Chester's person of the year!

I know this is probably late but St. Lawrence's in Chester should get a honorable mention. They fed people every night when there was no power.

Although I feel the OEM of Mendham Twp did a great job, he has already been recognized for his excellence. I think it is time someone else is recognized for their contributions, my vote is for Noreen Staples!!

My vote is for Noreen Staples. She has organized multiple trips to the Jersey Shore with an overwhelming energy. She has given countless hours of organizing, driving and distributing to those in need. She continues to make deliveries and plans to help wherever she is needed. LAF

Jane Shatz should be on this list. What Jane does through MCAW impacts the community in a positive way every single day, especially our youth and seniors.

Much like St. Lawrence, no one nominated Jane during the nomination period. So I hope you will vote for the people who did make the list! Thanks for your comments, guys. Its nice to see so many people interested in recognizing people in the community.

Sister of Christian Charity were amazing!
With a very limited budget they helped thousands of citizens from both the Mendham's and the Chester's. They are a blessing for all. Thank you. God bless you in the New Year.

The Sisters of Christian Charity opened their hearts and home to citizens from more than just Mendham and Chester. It was a great thing that they did to allow people to come in to either eat three meals a day and/or stay at the convent where there was heat, hot water and food. When other citizens were being turned away from the shelter set up at the Brookside Firehouse, noone was turned away from Sisters of Christian Charity. The kitchen staff also needs to be thanked for preparing all of the extra food needed to feed the people coming for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My vote is for Buzzy Thomas! Buzzy, his family and the good people of Mendham township spent countless hours running the shelter during the power outage, helping any one in need. He deserves recognition for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Buzzy Thomas gets my vote. His efforts during and after the storm were heroic. The men and women of the Mendham Twp Emergency Services should all be commended for providing food and shelter for over 200 neighbors while many of them were without power themselves!

Dr VanWoert has handled 2 recent crises admirably through her vigilant communications to large Chester population - the storm and increased police presence at our schools. She deserves to be recognized.

Noreen staples has really shown me the meaning of the term "pay it forward". She is not apart of any organization or committee; she is just one citizen "paying it forward". She is & has been doing all of this out of the goodness of her heart. Whether she wins this poll or not, myself, our family, and the victims of Hurricane Sandy know what an amazing & giving person she is!

My vote is for Buzzy Thomas. He did an amazing job during Sandy for the mendhams as well as coming to the aid of many surrounding towns thru out the county. But his caring and dedication didn't start there nor did it end there. He has always dedicated himself to helping others as is evidenced in his thirty plus years of volunteering. Buzzy continues to help people here at home and thru out the state. But he doesn't believe in doing things for the glory or recognition, he believes in helping because it is the right thing to do. It's just the way he lives his life.

TA
my vote goes to Buzzy Thomas. Throughout his lifetime his desire has always been to help others. His involvement with the firehouse and town has shown that time and time again. During Sandy he put his own life on hold to make sure that everyone in the area had assistance. Whether it was a listening ear, a rescue, information, or shelter he was willing to help every single person at any moment. Spending countless hours in the office answering questions and trying to solve problems might make someone irritable but not Buzzy. Sleep deprived and running near empty Buzzy always put on a smile and gave 100%. That being said, my vote wholeheartedly goes to Buzzy Thomas!

my vote is for buzzy he organized everything including all donations to the shore towns as well as taking care of mendham township. the brookside fire dept. and the first aid dept.and township police all put there own lives at risk that night, to help our own neighbors. this is about locals helping locals period.

To correct Mr Cleary, Buzzy as paid director of OEM, does not run the First Aid Squad, Fire Department or Police. While he was sitting in a warm office Robin Johnson was out in the storm running first aid calls, Jay Alderton was directing Brookside and Tom Montgomery was running Ralston. Many members of these organizations worked several days straight, put their lives at risk and were not compensated by the town. My vote is for the selfless devotion of the First Aid Squad and Fire Departments.

Buzzy organized everything including all donations to the shore towns Mr. Clearly? I'm not sure THAT is true, Ms. Noreen Staples is the one who has been working nonstop since the storm hit (and continues to do so) to arrange for donations to be brought to the shore, NOT buzzy.... Buzzy did a great job as his role as OEM, but there is a difference doing it as your job as opposed to out of the goodness of your heart. My vote is STILL for Noreen and it is ashame to now see someone else taking credit for HER efforts

Buzzy NEVER said he was taking credit for what Noreen has done. Noreen has done alot. Everyone pitches in in their own way.....Buzzy has nothing to be ashamed of....If you knew him personally, you would know he is not like that.

Never said HE was taking credit, I was correcting Mr. Cleary in his statement. Who said Buzzy had something to be ashamed of? MBM your comments aren't pertinent or responsive to what was said. And, for the record, I DO know him.

I have to say, this entire "contest" is getting a little out of control. It was meant to acknowledge those in the community who have done a lot to help. Buzzy has been recognized time and time again for his good deeds (or position he was appointed to do) - there is a BIG difference between doing your JOB and doing something out of a willingness to help others.... this shouldn't be a "popularity contest" and sadly, that appears to be what is happening - I can't wait until this thing is over.... some of you should be ashamed of yourselves
