Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

TELL US: What Will Make Route 206 Safer?

With three major accidents in as many weeks, we want to know your thoughts on how to make this major thoroughfare in Chester safe for travel.

Last month, a tractor trailer accident sent a woman to the hospital and closed route 206 in Chester for hours.

Two weeks ago, a car crashed off of route 206 in Chester, closing the road for 30 minutes.

And last week, a fatal accident on route 206 in Chester sent two people to the hospital, closed the road for hours and resulted in the death of an unborn child.

According to the Chester Township Police, these are not the first serious accidents along this stretch of road and they are unlikely to be the last.

So we want to know, Patch readers, does this concern you? Do you feel safe on route 206? And what would you do to make the roadway safer? Take our poll and comment below!

It's obvious Rt 206 needs to be widened due to the high volume of traffic. A two lane roadway is antiquated considering the amount to traffic. A divider would help as well. The issue with that would be the fact it would prevent deer from crossing which could cause addictional accidents.

A compilation of data for all the accidents should be studied. There seems to be a lack of attention/medical or unknown mechanical failures for each one of these sad events
Very Bold signs should be posted on the north and south boarders calling out how lethal this area has/can be ?..
Rumble strips/divider down the center line may save lives? deer will always be a problem, but who knows..

There have been so many fatalities on this road over the last 10 years, and not just in Chester. There have been a number in Flanders on the stretch of roadway near Oakwood Village and a few miles North. This area, as well as in Chester, have no divider. Do not know what happened last week, but the time was mid-afternoon. That is a time when a lot of accidents happen when people fall asleep at the wheel. Insurance stats. show this. I do feel that a divider would stop this lane crossing. It's a State owned highway--maybe our elected officials in these towns should get together with a proposal to the State.

Having driven on this road for sometime time now, it seems obvious that although the posted speed limit is 50 mph, cars travel upwards of 60 mph. How many roads with speed limits of 60 mph can you think of that do not have a concrete divider down the center? Many sections on 206 are very tight and I have felt nervous many times passing cars, traveling the opposite way, so closely. A center divider seems like an obvious measure that should be taken. Many of the horrific accidents that I can remember involve a cars crossing over lanes.

A short term improvement would be to install a rumble strip along the centerline of the road. There are too many distracted drivers operating on the roadways. This rumble strip would alert drivers inadvertently drifting out of their lane. This was discussed many years ago but was never installed.

Besides all that, they need a light at the intersection where the Shell Station/Dunkin Donuts is in Chester. Vehicles have to cross over four travel lanes plus one turn lane to get across. Daily, I see near misses. In order to avoid it, many townspeople turn the Rite Aid and Streets of Chester parking lots into roadways and travel through them to avoid the crossover, putting pedestrians at risk. What a mess.

Agree. I have crossed that death crossing a few times and you take your life into your own hands. Also, the new design at the light up at Larison's if you are coming South, doesn't allow you to see oncoming cars if you are turning left. Maybe it should be left on arrow only. Now you can turn any time its green, but if there are cars waiting to turn left towards library you can't see oncoming traffic at all.

personally having to travel there daily.... an additional light there would cause additional back up of traffic.... a simple sign not allowing you to cross 4 lanes of traffic would make more sense financially and help avoid those types of issues altogether especially the pedestrian issues., crossing outside of the cross walks there should be forbidden and ticketed if seen, its a dangerous spot.

Several years ago Chester asked the State to put up a sign warning of a high fatality risk are along RT 206 from Four Bridges road South. When the State refused,Chester put up their own sign. The State took it down.People need to learn to slow down and PAY ATTENTION! GET OFF OF THEIR PHONES.I was hit head on on RT.206 on my motorcyle last year. by someone who was not paying attention and driving too fast.WAKE UP America

Realistically, they are not going to be able to get funds to widen the roadway, but they could widen the center yellow painted area to be a yard or so, with rumble strips. There is plenty of room on the shoulder to make room for a wider area between the northbound and southbound lanes. It does seem that most of the accidents are caused by vehicles drifting into the wrong lane - this would wake them up and give them space and time to get back on their side.

People just ignore the speed signs or are so used to them, they don't see them anymore. Rumble strips are great, but still may not help with a slow reaction, so concrete dividers would certainly eliminate the head-ons. Drivers have to drive smarter--turn off the cell phone, make sure all passengers are seat belted and drive defensively! In a perfect world, of course.

Mark R: if one can't cross over the four lanes, then how do we get downtown, to school, church, etc from the old Gladstone side of 206? Unless I am missing something, the only alternative for this living off old Gladstone Road would be to travel through parking lots.

Seriously, NJ can't put dividers on every road. People need to learn to stay wake and be more careful. Many states have roads like this and this road is find DURING THE DAY IN CLEAR WEATHER.

That being said better lighting, center and side rumple strips couldn't hurt.

I think the problem is NJ drivers, not the road.

I don't think you can just say it's NJ drivers, etc.as LV Mom states.... many states have roads similiar to Rt. 206 and don't have the number of crashes, etc. NJ has a HIGH/HUGE volume of traffic. These roads were designed when there were fewer cars, people, stores, businesses and yes ...distractions in our cars - phones, kids, food, etc. I think people think that's it's Ok to go 60+ mph on 206 and it's not.

Perhaps more police presence would help. A unmanned police car with a mannequin would slow people down, especially if it was moved from time to time.

The width of the roadway isnt the problem, there are accidents in the double wide area as well as the single.. if anything the changing widths may keep drivers alert and awake. I think the issue is cell phones. I think auto makers should be pressured to add jamming devices that will not allow cell phones to work when the car is in drive.. Just like the dash TV, they shut off when the car is in drive..
