Telethon to Benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims
The one-hour telethon will feature superstar celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen and Sting.
Americans are used to watching telethons for desperate and needy people around the globe.
On Friday, a one-hour live benefit telethon featuring superstar guests will raise money for an issue close to home: the victims of Superstorm Sandy.
Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Sting headline the event. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" airs from 8 to 9 p.m. on NBCUniversal networks.
The Huffington Post reports that money raised will go to the Red Cross to help survivors with the baiscs—medical care, shelter, food.
The live telethon will be hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Matt Lauer and broadcast from NBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
The following channels will air the show: NBC, Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy and USA, or watch the livestream on NBC.com.
How to donate
To donate, you can visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Yes, I would like to preform on this telethon too. I will do a skit playing the part of Barack Obama coming to devastated New Jersey for a campaign photo op then doing little of anything else. After the show I will be granted an agricultural property tax rate like Springsteen and Bon Jovi.

Clyde you are 100% right!!! Jersey was Obama's biggest photo op/campaign trip all week. Are you kidding me? This guy is the opportunist of a lifetime! And Maria, isn't this a forum? Aren't forums for opinions? Aren't some opinions about politics? Take off your rose-colored glasses and see what's really up!!!

Amen - if New Jersey were a swing state like Florida was - Obama would have every resource available transferred to the state just like Bush did in Florida in 2004. He seems to have skipped Hudson county (Hoboken) because of all the democrats who are like sheep following the shepherd - if there was a chance that he could lose NJ things would be different.

I agree Maria. But some people (particularly those that lack intelligence and the ability to perform in other aspects of their lives) are unable to feel empathy towards others. It's also a characteristic of sociopaths. Just sayin'.

So Jessica, what did Obama do after he left here? He went back on the campaign trail. He flew in, shook a few hands, and LEFT. It was exactly what Clyde said it was- photo op. And by the way failure to feel empathy is only one characteristic of sociopaths- so you should check your facts. Sociopaths are actually quite smart. Read a little more.

Funny, I seem to remember Christie saying today that the president today offered to use AC-130s to fly in equipment and personel from other states that offered assistance. Romney on the other hand compared the destruction of the east coast to cleaning up his high school football field after a game.

Are most of you people playing with a full deck? It's common knowledge that every bad neighborhood or town is run by democrats. Newark, the oranges, irvington, Camden, jersey city, Detroit,etc... That's because no republican would tolerate it so they vote in the obamas. First White Castle now the White House. Pretty soon is gonna be your house!

It truly amazes me how many of you have your heads so far up your asses that you cannot see reality.
EVERY PRESIDENT makes tours of areas that have been declared disasters. Just because it happened a week before the election does not make it a political stunt or photo op.
More importantly, just miles from Bloomfield, Staten Island is severely damaged and isn't getting the support they need. A man in Newark drowned in his car by a sudden tidal surge, a two year old and four year old were torn from their mother's arms and their little bodies were just discovered, people have lost all of their possessions, have no power, heat, food, transportation or knowledge of what is yet to come. GET OVER YOURSELVES!
This is a time to support one another and not play your stupid little games of political name calling. Put your energies into something constructive and help a neighbor or someone else not as well off as you are.

Curbkiller, beautifully said. Problem is people arent happy unless theyre demoralizing or badgering someone. For that reason I moved the hell out of Mahwah and New Jersey so I could be amongst people that are civilized and care about others. Being a northern for all my years, makes me ashamed of how we look to take advantage of everyone and look to screw our fellow man.Plus, I have finally realized how NJ screws their residents with car insurance and property taxes. Everyone needs to help others during these trying times and stop blaming everyone else.

It took Barack Obama 7 days to visit Joplin, Missouri after a tornado wiped out half of the town and killed 120 people.
It took Barack Obama fourteen days to visit the gulf coast after the BP oil spill.
Obama declined to visit Tennessee after the historic 2010 1000 year floods.
Obama ignored the Texas wildfires when over 400 homes were lost.
And, of course, Obama ignored the calls for help from Benghazi.
But it took Barack Obama only one day to visit the hurricane damage on the east coast.
Then again, there’s an election next week.

Its nice to see that even in a disaster people expect the president to teleport workers to our state. I am SURE another president would have had that power. #duh

All I can do is laugh at mostly everything I've read. It's an article with a positive theme where it's going to help the people affected and most of you want to make it political bringing negativity to the conversation. So against the principle and reason of why it's being done. Unbelievable! If you can't focus on Sandy's devastation, your heartless. Stop bitching and help out, period.

As for Booker. You are right and I personally like the guy. He is trying the best he can and he is honorable. In fact id vote for him for president if he ran. He's a good guy!
And he can't be bought. I also liked Sharpe James but for other reasons.

After 20 years of primarily Republican administrations, our Extreme Right Wing neighbors are apparently unable to accept the unfamiliar image of competent Federal and state officials doing their job extremely well in a time of major national disaster.
Republican, Democratic and Independent government officials have done an outstanding job - by working effectively together. All of us in Northern California should be reassured that this effective Federal and State collaboration and cooperation is now in place... because we all know that someday we are likely to need it after The Big One strikes here.
I saw US Air Force C-130s landing utility crews and equipment from Midwestern and Western states. I saw US Navy helicopter carriers move toward the Eastern Seaboard to provide rescues and shuttle supplies. I saw US Army ready-to-eat meals and drinking water being distributed in New Jersey. I see Federal reserves of gasoline being released and trucked in to relieve the fuel shortage. I see the Army Corp of engineers mobilizing to help evaluate and restore shattered infrastructure across the region. I haven't seen a single Federal or state official standing in front of the cameras, making this massive effort into a "photo op." Not one.
Are you sure you want smaller, less capable government? I, for one, am grateful that this is the government we've got.
