Poll: Are You OK With Expected V.P. Visit Disruptions?

Was the area given enough notice?

It seemed to come out of nowhere. Within a few hours Friday, word spread that Phillip and Barbara Sellinger, of Old Glen Road in Morris Township, were hosting on Monday a fundraiser for Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez. And, the guest of honor expected to join him and the Sellinger's that night would be none other than Vice President Joe Biden.

Suddenly, the Morristown Partnership was issuing notices regarding expected traffic delays in the area. The Morris School District was letting parents know that after school events would be cancelled on Monday, and that schools were likely going to let out an hour earlier, in order to allow people to avoid what is going to likely be one heck of a traffic mess (update: Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty said Saturday that schools would not be closing an hour early and after-school activities would not be affected by the fundraiser).

Patch reader Susan Tangel also noted that "office employees along the route and near the venue have been notified to make plans to either pick up their children early or find care for them because employees will be stuck in their office buildings until the event commences.

Area residents' lives are being disrupted for non-official business because of one township resident," she said. "Who is paying for the police? Who is paying for the cleanup? Where are the attendees planning on parking? No area businesses have been asked permission to use their parking lots. Who is paying for all the signage around the township advertising the road closures? Who paid for the employees to put up these signs? Are the taxpayers footing these miscellaneous bills?"

Tangel concluded her statement regarding the event asking "why is one citizen allowed to disrupt the lives of thousands and impact area residents for a fundraiser? Why were the residents not consulted? Who granted permission for this? Why weren't public venues considered for this event?"

Morristown councilwoman Rebecca Feldman was also concerned about the ability to navigate town on Monday, saying, "I'm an Independent, so my view is as a parent and a citizen concerned about mobility. The road closures point out that we need more and better ways to get around the area, (such as) on foot and on bicycles. So many area roads lack basic sidewalks or even a simple, painted shoulder space."

We want to know: Do you agree with the above comments? Are you bothered by the seemingly-sudden announcement (some media outlets reported in February that Biden was expected to attend a Menendez fundraiser in New Jersey on March 19, but could not confirm a time or location)? Are you fine with it because you support Menendez and/or Biden? Are you opposed because you don't? Regardless of your political stripe, what do you think about this whole thing overall? Vote in our poll below and chime in in the comments.

  • Are You OK With all the Disruptions Expected for the Joe Biden Appearance at the Sen. Menendez Fundraiser in Morris Township?

(Voting has been closed for this question)
    • Yes. I am voting for both Sen. Menendez and Pres. Obama in November so I am supportive of whatever they have to do!
        58 (13%)
    • Sort of. I'm not putting my political beliefs on display, but I understand this is part of a re-election campaign.
        48 (11%)
    • I'm not so sure. I'm not putting my political beliefs on display, but this is just going to be a giant mess, and that is annoying.
        75 (17%)
    • Absolutely not. I am not a supporter of either Biden or Menendez, and this is just a major hassle.
        234 (55%)
    • Undecided.

How appropriate that Biden will be visiting a (former) brothel to raise funds!

Paul, I thought that was the same house as the Madam's...was not positive, tho. Nice digs. Wonder if the purchase price was lowered after the fiasco with the old owners.....nice place for a party but not the kind that shuts down an entire community for hours at a time during business rush hours. Should be lots of rooms to mingle around in. lol.

How about these rich people go write each other checks somewhere that doesn't require kids sports to be canceled, play practice to be canceled, SAT prep classes to be canceled, etc. Seriously, have it at some hotel and not a a private home, It also seems ridiculous that apparently our school system is unable to cancel events at the affected schools; no no, they have to cancel every activity system wide.

@Paul - very funny, I was thinking the same thing!
@Chris - first, nothing has been canceled, all closings were retracted by the district yesterday...second, you do understand that Normandy Park School, Frelinghuysen and MHS all have students who live in the area effected by these closures? so to "only cancel events at the affected schools" is a ridiculous statement...
I am wholly against these closures - not just because I live on Normandy Parkway, and the only way home from work for me is either Columbia Tpk or Madison Ave - because it is ridiculous to inconvenience thoursands of residents, commuters, etc. so that 2 people can have a cocktail party at rush hour. Give me a break. Why on Earth was this allowed in the first place?

$$$$$$ will get you a permit to do just about anything within the law.....that's how this party was allowed.....political and financial pull.....$ influences a lot of people out there...that's not always a good thing at all. Still curious to know if there will be a "No Fly" zone imposed in our skies? Would this protection apply to the VP as well as the Pres? Anyone know? I'd call the Mo'Town airport but they'd probably show up at my doorstep and arrest me or something along those lines. lol. Hopefully Monday evening will arrive quickly and it will all be over without incident and/or hassle. IMHO.

Why do you care if there's a "No Fly Zone?" Were you planning to jet of to Monte Carlo that evening? Seriously?!

The good news is the school district has reconsidered and is now back to a full day--as it should be. As a working parent as many other are, it is ridiculous to close school early just because someone important is coming to town. The fact that he's NOT visiting the children to spread the importance of education rather trying to make money for the Party is even more of a ridiculous reason to close school. I'm happy the school district has seen common sense--or perhaps listened to the concerns of the parents.
As I live down the street from Biden, I have no problem of his visiting a private home. It is the right of all people to invite whom they wish into their home but, I certainly hope I'm not paying for it in my taxes for the police to work overtime. As it is, the township has CUT many services because of the lack of government funding. I would certainly expect the Democratic Party will pay for these services and not burden the Township further.

Amy, I have a gut feeling these costs will be borne by the township and other governmental agencies but not the Democratic Party, itself. I'm not certain of this at all but I'll be pleasantly pleased and surprised "if" all costs are to be picked up in full by the Party. Anyone out there know how to determine who is paying for these costs?

My comments and opinions are on the original article thread about the event, itself. Glad to see they have gone back to a full day with the schools but the rest is absurd and uncalled for....have your fund raisers in a place and at a time that does not totally mess up the schedules of the rest of the community. Fund raisers are not on the top of my "must do" or "need to do" lists. This entire scenario is uncalled for and should not be a burden on the shoulders of the residents and tax payers. Who is paying for alll of ththis disruption and police/law enforcement security and traffic control, etc? I guess "we", the local taxpayers are....with the exception of possible Secret Service protection for Biden...that would be our federal taxes hard at work, I guess. Will there also be a "no fly" zone over our area??? Really, folks, this whole "party" is ridiculous. Want to raise funds for a political party??? Then do it at a time & place that does not screw up an entire community's life and schedule. IMHO.

The Patch survey questionnaire's responses are skewed such that they hardly answer the posed question. Instead, the choices simply pander to narrow partisanship without addressing the issue. "Yes" or "No" are the only reasonable option answers. Your insertion of partisanship skews the answers. One can only presume that a visit by a national Republican candidate would be welcomed. In 1992 former President George HW Bush visited Madison while campaigning for re-election and was heartily welcomed. Should we infer that the Patch is pandering to local partisanship?

President Reagan was here as well as Nixon. I remember the Reagan arrival at the Morristown Airport because it was just after he told us not to worry about poor kids not eating vegatables because they had ketchup and then the papers printed the elaborate menu to be served for his visit. A group of us carried picket signs suggested that he sybstitute ketchup for veggies also, as his limo and the secret service drove by. Yes, his visit was costly and the local municipalities were not reinbursed for the cost of their services.

At Ms Brady & Davison as I rwcall Bush was herr in a public forum as was Reagan. You seem to miss the point that this is a private fundraiser. I didn't get an invite. Did anyone else? I couldn't agree w/ Ms. Tangel more.If he was going to be in a public venue paid for by Obamas election war chest planned in a organized and thoughtful manner than I would say fine. This type of thing should never happen again and the mayor should be telling his
constituents if the Selligmans will be receiving the bill for
And Ms Feldman-you're a councilwoman and all your
worried about are walkways? Seriously?

If you expect to be traveling westbound on 78 or 24 at rush hour make sure you bring a good book to read because both will be closed for significant periods of time as the Veep travels from EWR to Morris county. Lived this nightmare back in the 90's whenever Clinton or Gore would come to NYC to collect money for their campaigns. Eight months to election day, expect more of the same.

A big problem I have with this fundraiser is that it will remove the police from patrolling the roads; we have had many burglaries in our neighborhood in the last few weeks!

@Elihu -- We're sorry you felt the options suggested partisanship. It certainly wasn't our intention, but we get the concern. Thanks for elaborating in a comment — we always want to hear as many views as possible, even if some feel we miss the mark setting up the options in a poll.

No need to apologize, the answers cover the political spectrum. Elihu is just upset because the poll is running 3-1 against the Dems.

Elihu is exactly right. Why insert political leanings at all? They aren't relative to the question. Why not the following answer, "I won't vote for either candidate, but of course this is a normal occurrence in election years"?
