Bonfire and Pipes Warm Chester Inside and Out

Residents from Chester Township and Borough braved the cold for a family friendly winter tradition

Originally planned to be a Christmas Tree bonfire on Jan. 14, the Chester Borough and Township Recreation Committees adapted the event after running into a permit issue.

"The NJDEP Forest Fire Service was reluctant to grant anymore permits," said Heather Ronco, a member of the Chester Township Recreation Committee. "But we didn't mind. We just had a bonfire with s'mores and hot chocolate."

Chester Bagel donated bagels for the crowd, who were entertained by bagpiper Matthew Wood, director of the Rory O'Moore School of Pipes and Drums. "The bagpiper was fantastic," Ronco said. "Although he did have to take a few breaks because of the extreme cold."

Mayor Robert Davis and members of the First Aid Squad and Fire Department joined the community in the last celebration of the holiday season, which was a joint effort with the Recreation Departments of both Chester Township and Borough.

"We are making a concerted effort to plan events together," Ronco said. "Although there are two municpalities, most residents don't feel a separation. We wish to offer as much as we can to all our residents, regardless of where they live. We want them to feel comfortable attending any event we sponsor."

Working together also avoids duplication of effort and planning competing events.

"The Christmas Tree lighting was a great example of cooperation," Ronco said. "Everything was a joing effort. From decorating the tree and the gazebo to making and serving the hot chocolate."

The cold may have frozen the marshmallows, but it didn't dampen spirits. "The marshmallows quickly froze, but it was warm by the fire," Ronco said. "Everyone was amazingly cheerful."
