Hoopsters Raise Funds For Teen's Cancer Fight

'Hoops for Johnny' nets $1300 for Chester teenager's medical expenses.

On Thursday, April 4, the students and staff of Black River Middle School were pitted against one another in a hard-fought game of hoops.  It was a close match with the students edging out their teachers; however, no one seems to remember the exact score.

A competitive ball game where no one remembers the score?

That’s because both teams were winners in the quest to raise money for Johnny Seel, a Chester teen fighting cancer.

According to Black River’s Guidance Counselor, Beth Grasso, the charity event netted over $1,300 for Johnny’s medical expenses.

“I’m so thrilled by the outpouring of support from everyone in our school community,” Grasso said, “and I know the Seel family is overwhelmed and extremely grateful.”

The game began with a unified “We love Johnny” chant from the entire crowd, followed by a rendition of the national anthem sung by eighth grader Jenna Downs.

In addition to a huge turnout of fans, there were over 30 members of the educational staff, including substitute teachers, who participated in the event as players, cheerleaders, and supporters.  The faculty team was augmented by DARE officers Cpl. Anthony DaCunza and Lt. Edward Noonan of the Chester Township Police who demonstrated their team spirit both on and off the court.

“It was for a wonderful cause and we enjoyed coming together with the teachers and the community for a child in need,” Noonan said.

The Black River Middle School Student Government Committee organized the fundraiser.

“All of our students exhibited the kind of caring and concern that makes us so proud,” Principal Robert Mullen said.
