Councilman Cited For Allegedly Hitting Woman With Car

Mendham Borough's Louis Garubo ticketed in accident that sent 80-year-old woman to the hospital.

A Mendham Borough Councilman has been cited for backing up his vehicle improperly and striking a pedestrian in a parking lot last week, police said.

Mendham Borough Councilman Louis Garubo allegedly backed his vehicle into Athena Milosis, 80, on Sept. 27 in the Kings Shopping Center parking lot, police said.

As first reported by Patch, the accident occurred at about 9 a.m. when Milosis was entering the lot from the designated walkway at the Mendham area senior housing complex, according to a report by the Mendham Borough Police.

Police said Garubo hit Milosis while backing up on a one-way roadway. Garubo's business, Blue Ridge Pool and Fireplace Center, is located in the shopping complex.

Milosis suffered multiple injuries and was transported to the Morristown Medical Center for treatment and was kept there until Saturday, Sept. 30, police said.

According to police, Garubo told Officer Chris Hopf on the scene he was backing up due to another vehicle that was parked ahead of him.

Garubo was issues a summons for improper backing, which carries a fine up to $100 and two points on the driving record, police said.

Since Garubo is a councilman, the case is likely to be heard in a venue other than Mendham.

Certainly a lesson for us all to use extreme caution behind the wheel, especially in areas of heavy pedestrian traffic. I can't even imagine the pain from being struck by a car. I sincerely hope and pray that the injured lady has a speedy and full recovery.
