Cablevision Blacks Out WPIX

Fee dispute leads to a blackout of the Tribune-owned station.

A dispute over retransmission fees has pushed WPIX-TV off Cablevision.

The Tribune-owned station was dropped from the area cable provider's channel lineup over what Cablevision called "anti-consumer demands" by the WPIX parent.

But WPIX said it had hoped to keep the station on air while negotiations continued.

In a statement, Tribune wrote that "without warning, Cablevision unilaterally removed four Tribune stations in four markets from its cable systems. Cablevison took this action despite our offer of an unconditional extension of the current carriage agreement with no change in terms while negotiations continued."

Cablevision, meanwhile, fired back, arguing that Tribune was trying to solve its financial problems "on the backs of Cablevision customers."

Other Tribune-owned stations also went dark in south New Jersey and in Connecticut.

Editor's note: Patch has a partnership with PIX 11, called "Patch on PIX," where the station features major stories from Patch sites in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Jokes on you Tribune: nobody watches WPIX. See, when AMC or Comedy Central or Food Network gt blocked, customers rally because they have programming people actually watch. Nobody watches the CW. Most probably wouldn't even notice that it was blacked out if the news didn't report on it.

this is a joke and travesty - WPIX is an ORGINAL TV channel for the metro area and goes back to the 40's! Before cable for crissakes! How could you! Yankee games and 'Ballantine Blasts' in the 50's-60's; Met games today, Jerry Girard sports in the 70's; Pat Harper anchoring...Honeymooners and great reruns today....WTF? This is criminal.

I enjoy watching WPIX-11 5pm & 10pm news. They produce a better consumer news show than WCBS, WNBC, & WABC. The other three either over report world & national news or they are pushing their programing. I called cablevision to complain & asked for a prorated bill, since they aren't broadcasting WPIX, but that went no where.

Any one that fires their father from the board of the company he started doesn't command any respect from me. Jim Dolan needs a bigger house than the one he has on Centre Island. That's why they charge outrageous rates.

In my opinion Cablevision is GREEDY.
They are forcing their customers to get receivere boxes (two years for free) then, they will RAM IT TO YOU.
Cablevision did the same thing several years ago for QVC and other shopping channels. You want those, you had to pay $6.95 per month per box.
We have NO choice !!!!!!!!
Cablevision has a 10 year contract with the municipalities they serve, isn't this a monopoly?

As I mentioned before, they did this with the QVC and other shopping channels. Pure GREED.
They don't make enough money.
Righ5t now, we have a blue screen, no TV.
When we signed up for Cablevision, we had a CONTRACT with them for TV service, as you know, they continue to change the rules for THEIR benefit.

Cablevision is the last company on the market to make their customers get a box. Direct TV and dish network just lost channels and their rates cannot include your internet and phone. Cablevision just went fully digital to prepare for more channels like nfl network and nfl redzone we just acquired. Dish, Fios and direct tv the wait is several days usually for service calls, cablevision can book same day or next day calls, plus the issue with WPIX is on tribune's side for the agreement.

@ Sgt tackleberry - It takes two to come to an agreement, so I am not sure what you mean by "the issue with WPIX is on tribune's side..". This is only one of many contracts that cablevision has had a problem negiotiating. Everytime Cablevison does not want to pay the channels for their programming - we the consumer lose out. My bill continues to go up and yet I keep losing channels. I'm sure the fact that Dolan is the highest paid executive of ANY cable company does escape the companies that they are negotiating with. Its hard to cry poverty when your CEO gets paid 12.9 MILLION a year!
And I don't really care about service calls. My cable regularly goes out for hours at a time. The problem doesn't go away. I gave up on service calls a long time ago.

Cable box, free for two years, then $6.95 per box per month.
If you have basic cable around $12.50 per month, and four channels are spanish, so that cuts it down and now, if you have four boxes @$6.95, you will be paying $27.80 on a $12.50 service. THAT SUCKS

I am so fed up with cablevision, if I didnt hate it so much when I was with verizon then I would consider making the switch and getting away from them. Most of my shows are on channel 11 and this is the 2nd time they blocked out a channel (last time only lasted about 2 weeks though) and it is over 2 months and enough is enough. I really wish there was a way to screw over cable since they are screwing all of us by cutting out our channel. As many times as I call and complain though, I still am spinning my wheels and getting no where, all they do is read you a script. We pay almost $200 a month and dont even get all the basic channels, why not cut out ten of the trash channels and give us this one back. Nothing like paying for Starz and HBO also and all you see are repeats. Completely annoyed at this BS!!!

FIOS only offers DSL internet speeds in Parsippany. Not that Optimum's cable speeds are that much better (I would guess I average 5Mb/s, though at peak times it can get as low as .5Mb/s), but until FIOS offers there full high speed internet, Optimum is still the better option.

Again, DirecTV or cut the providers out and use the internet exclusively. You can get most movies and programming. Sure, you will pay more for internet because you are not bundling TV, but if you bundle voice you can get a decent rate and not worry about who's carrying what channel anymore.

In regards to Michael Brancato -- FIOS does offer fiber vs. DSL. In addition, I have had both FIOS and Cablevision. Speed tests have shown that FIOS is better than the Cablevision speeds. In addition, FIOS maintains its speed (upload/download) consistently over the entire day. This is not the case with Cablevision -- where speed fluctuations do occur to the point of crawling (please note that I have had the high speed version of Cablevision)

I have to admit to not watching WPIX Channel 11 that much except for its news programs and our Mets but during the past year ro two that Tribune's Antenna TV has been on WPIX channel 11.4 / Cablevision 114 I have become accustomed to viewing the old shows such as All in the Family, Maude, Dennis The Menace, Jack Benny, Burns & Allen and so many more. For those not familiar with the sub channels such as 11.4, the digital revolution was pushed by the FCC in order to allow the broadcast stations to have a number of sub channels that can be received over the air without need for wired or satelite televison. WNBC 4 has several digital sub channels, so does PBS station 13 and 21. Many more are possible with stations such as WABC maybe having Disney and ESPN channels over the air that way. WNYW Fox 5 could transmit the Fox news, business and sports channels that way. And the list goes on and on.

FIOS. I can't even begin to tell you how much better it is than Cablevision. In terms of price they're more or less the same but that's where the comparisons end. The FIOS box is 10 times faster (pulling up the guide, changing channels), the interface and appearance is a 1,000 times more modern and appealing, the FIOS app is awesome, and there has never been a b.s. disagreement with any networks since I've had it (plus, I've had the NFL Network the whole time). In regard to internet, I have never had to reset my wireless router in over three years (had to do it at least once a day with Optimum)...I told my brother-in-law to switch because he was also having problems with Cablevision. He eventually did and can't believe how much better it is either.

@ maryanne yes i do and im a knicks fan hoping for big things this year. @ lorraine yes dolan did take a big bonus but over this year he has put alot of money toward the company to better his product. If your not getting the proper service you should take it higher down in bergen county we make sure our customers don't have issues like you say you have. These networks want alot of money for broadcasting which we try to negotiate so our customers don't pay more. Was it right for Fox to try and charge us a ridiculous amount so we would have to raise your rates for a few channels? Ppl have their pros and cons but in the end cable will be on top.

We only have television with Cablevision, the basic package that gets us over 100 channels for $87 a month which includes the fee for 3 converter boxes required when they began scrambling the signal a channel or two at a time. The big lie that it was digitalization was proven false when over the air channels that were then being broadcast in digital came through without the boxes.

For phone service we maintained Verizon wired until a year ago. After seeing the little clock radio size box called wireless home phone connect at the Verizon Wireless kiosk in BJ's, we bought one for $29 and had them switch the home phone to wireless which gives us unlimited nationwide calling, voice mail and caller id for only $27 monthly including taxes. The device has a battery giving back up for many hours which I have tested to at least 40 hours. Our portable wireless home phone base plugs into this box and we also have a $10 wired phone plugged in also.

For internet we use Verizon too both wired and wireless.

Zoo Keeper, FIOS won't be coming to many places because of not enough customers subscribing to the service despite those who have it saying it is far superior. However, since Verizon already has lines in place and on average owns half of the poles with the Borough of Butler owning the rest of the poles, they can operate cable tv service. Something else to think about, I believe the FCC gave approval to public power utilities (owned by government entitires or membership co-operatives) to provide both internet and cable tv service through the electirc lines but NJ law would have to be changed for that to happen here.

Even if we try to work it out to the least expensive, the package is still the "most economical" or drops channels that we want. Cablevision is sucking us dry up here! They are the greediest company in the world, their arrogance is only matched by the Port Authority. They have a monopoly and dont care about their customers. In this recession most companies are giving more and charging less to keep customers happy. Cablevision is charging more and getting greedier. They are forcing everyone to get boxes, they say it is FCC, fine who cares who it is... The most important issue there is that I pay a monthly fee for a service. It is ILLEGAL to then charge me for a box to get the service that I already pay for. There is a class action lawsuit against cablevision for many millions of dollars that is sitting in the judges hands now. We need to allow comcast to be able to compete or we need someone to regulate these predtory businesses like cablevison. Charging over $150 a month for just a basic cable, telephone ( Which NO ONE uses ever) and internet is a crime and James Dolan should be in jail.

There needs to be a new cable company that does it better than these old out of date greedy corporations. There should be a cable company that charges me per channel and I choose which ones they watch. This would mean no disputes because if I pay $2 per channel $1 goes to the cablecompany the other $1 goes to the broadcast company. Then I wouldnt have to pay for the stupid channels like BET or the spanish channels or Oprah. But this would make too much sense and be good for the customer, and noboday wants that. They only care about maximizing their profits so Dolan can get richer. Id love to see the Occupy movement get a hold of this criminal Dolan

What people don't seem to realize is that Cablevision is not doing this. Originally, cable companies were required to carry all broadcast signals in their service area if the broadcaster wanted to be carried and broadcasters had to make their signal available at no charge if they wanted to be carried. Due to deregulation, the FCC no longer enforces this must-carry requirement and broadcasters are allowed to "negotiate" with cable and satellite providers to charge them for the privilege of carrying their "free" signal. These charges ALWAYS get passed on to viewers. The only way to change this is to demand that Congress re-regulate both broadcast and cable TV. It's not going to happen in today's anti-government climate but that's one reason we pay so much. As for me, I haven't watched Channel 11 since Diver Dan and Winchell Mahoney time in the 60s so I couldn't care less how long it's off.

Most do not understand that there are renters/license fees to carry and broadcast channels. When those fees go up they will be passed on to the consumer like anything else. Not to mention paying $170.00 for a service that is on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, to help babysit and raise children, fill in time that could be well spent doing more productive things, meanwhile people will blow 100.00's of dollars in one day to go to one Met game for a couple of hours.
