Fallen Tree Kills 2 Adults, 2 Children Survive

Children escape with non-life-threatening injuries after tree crushes vehicle in Mendham.

Two adults were killed and two children survived after a tree fell and crushed their vehicle on North Gate Road Monday night in Mendham Township, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management said.

According to the Morris County OEM, the fatalities were an adult female and an adult male. The identities of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.

The Mendham Township Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle accident at about 7:30 p.m., the Morris County OEM office said.

According to OEM officials, when first responders arrived on the scene, a tree of approximately 24 to 36 inches in diameter had come down on a pickup truck carrying the four individuals.

Two children were removed from the vehicle by emergency responders with non-life threatening injuries, OEM officials said.

Mendham Borough Chief of Police Pat Libertino said his department tried to assist but couldn't make it to the scene because the conditions were so poor.

"We have 90 percent of the people are without power in the borough," Libertino said.

The Mendham Township Police Department along with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Section and the Morris County Medical Examiners Officer are on the scene investigating.

Why do people not heed the warnings of STAY INSIDE or STAY OFF THE ROADS? Now 2 children are probably without parents because someone thought they knew better. What a shame.

Seriously ! Don't assume you know people's circumstances! Being judgmental never helps any situation especially this devastated family's situation. Words of kindness would be more appropriate during this terrible time.
